While searching the northern Quabbin today for turtles to photograph, I spotted this musk turtle, or stinkpot, basking on a log. After watching it for about 25 minutes this northern painted turtle joined him. Musky left a few minutes after he appeared on the end of the log...
Well, I didn't plan on directing traffic this morning. I saw 7 different snappers and I wasn't even looking for them but its always a treat to see these dinosaurs out of the water.
That awkward moment when you realize you took the wrong turn over New Jersey while migrating north and ended up in the wrong pond.
The first sunny day we’ve had and the eastern painted turtles are out in droves (whats a drove?)…… 19, count them!
I stumbled upon a bunch os garter snakes a few weeks ago. Today I found 8 of then scattered along an old stone wall. This. was the largest one sunning itself on the wall.
Everywhere I went today I saw snapping turtles… females laying eggs everywhere. Their once a year foray out of water to historical nesting spots for them.
YAY ! The first northern painted turtles of the year!!
For the next month turtles will be crossing the roads from their ponds to lay eggs, then returning back to their ponds. I found this spotted turtle a few days ago and helped it go where it wanted.
